Visual and Performing Arts

The ÁùºÏ²ÊͶעÍø Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA) offers programs that span visual arts, media, music and performing arts.

Musicals

This year, Carmel staff directed, produced and delivered an outstanding musical – The Wedding Singer – over three consecutive nights.

This follows in the footsteps of previous performances. In 2017, The Little Shop of Horrors delighted audiences and in 2019 The Wizard of Oz was a sell-out success, even after relocating the performance to a bigger venue. In 2021, The Addams Family again wowed the audiences with the high standard of performance by the students.

Music

The Music program begins in the Primary School, with music lessons delivered as a part of the curriculum. Additional tuition for musical instruments or voice can be arranged to suit each student. Instruments available include guitar, piano, bass guitar, drums, saxophone, flute, clarinet, violin, trumpet and voice also possible (depending on the level of interest). Expert tutors are sourced to run these sessions which are affordably priced. More information is available forÌýKindy-Year 3, andÌýYear 4-12Ìýstudents. Private tuition is available to students from Pre-Primary onwards.

Drama

The Drama program commences in Year 7 and covers writing, directing and performing with some of the projects undertaken including humourous infomercials, melodrama performances, circus skills workshops, critiques of live performances and, when possible, participation in festivals such as YOHFest.

Media

The Media program enables students to grasp the basics of cinematography and editing, coupled with the ability to make short films and music videos. Students gain a broad range of experience from working on films with a variety of different genres to advertisements, photography and documentaries.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts is a dynamic hub with a collaborative approach to learning and sharing technology and resources. A visual feast of colour, creativity and innovation, our stimulating environment enables students to share, cultivate and convey ideas with others. Our semester program in Years 7-9 exposes students to many disciplines and techniques and in year 10, the year-long program consolidates techniques learnt previously and prepares students for their senior years. Our Year 11 and 12 program is growing in popularity and has seen some wonderful pieces created, several of which have been selected for the annual Year 12 Perspectives exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Students in our Primary School are also able to access the High School Art Room, with studentsÌývisiting for special classes throughout the year.
