The Learning Space

罢丑别听Entrepreneur Program at Carmel has 颈迟鈥檚 own amazing learning space on the mezzanine level in the library. Designed specifically to create an innovative learning space.

The School engaged Bob Britton, Principal and Lead Designer at Evoke, for the project. Bob has a wealth of experience in the service arena, with a focus on creating public spaces. With over 40 years in the design space, Bob had a lot of experiences to draw on when planning the space at Carmel.

鈥淭he most important consideration was to provide not only a learning space but an environment that fosters engagement between students,鈥 he said. Because the curriculum for this program is so unique and it will be taught differently from other courses at Carmel, the classroom needed to be different, fit-for-purpose and create more of an independent, adult learning environment. 鈥淭his space will be akin to something you might recognise from the business world, or from a TAFE or university setting, where students will be more self-directed and less teacher-driven,鈥 Bob said. While all spaces need to comply with the relevant codes and need to be ergonomically designed, you can have a bit of fun with a school learning environment refurbishment. 鈥淭his space will be more vibrant, colourful and quite eye-popping when compared to other traditional classrooms,鈥 Bob says. The colours of the space are tonal in base, with a subtle orange as the centrepiece. While the importance of colour theory in design is still debated amongst professionals, Bob is confident that the vibrant orange and tonal greys in the carpet, designed to blend to a nice pop, will be stimulating but not distracting for students.

Bob鈥檚 favourite feature of the new classroom is the auditorium space. 鈥淚t will be a very attractive feature of the learning space and will complement the excitement generated by the 鈥榩itches鈥 made in this space,鈥 he said. Bob also loves the natural light that streams in through the high windows.

Like all plans made in 2020, there were some delays with the refurbishment of this space, but it is now an inspirational hub for the Entrepreneurship Program.

When the program was introduced, the learning space was something of a pioneering experience for Bob. 鈥淏ecause the program was new, we had to make an educated guess as to what the students and teachers would need. He created the perfect inspiring space and the students have been engaged to take their ideas to a whole new level 鈥 thanks Bob!
