It was in 2010 that Mr Heiny Ellert first spoke to students at Carmel High School about his experiences during the Holocaust. Every year since, he and his beloved wife TobyÌýwelcomed groups of Year 10s into their home and allowed the students to interview him for the Living Historian Project. Our students always felt so privileged and humbled to learn about his life. Always the gentleman, Mr Ellert’s humour and wonderful nature made the students feel at ease and able to speak to him about difficult topics.
Mr Ellert was so generous with his time, even when in recent yearsÌýit became more difficult for him to speak due to ill health. Each time he relayed the stories of his past, he relived the horrors and overwhelming grief and hardship of those years. And yet he had an unwavering commitment to tell his story to the youth so they would never forget and so he continued welcoming our students to hear about his incredible life.
We at Carmel mourn the passing of a humble and special friend of our School. He will be sorely missed. Baruch Dayan Emet.
