As part of the Board鈥檚 strategy development cycle, a new 5-year plan has been developed and accepted which coincides with the appointment of the new Principal, Dr Julie Harris, from 2022.

These are exciting times for the Carmel Community and the ambitious plan will work to counter many of our challenges and keep building upon our even greater strengths. After 5 years as Board President, Debbie Silbert has decided to hand over her role to Vice President Mark Majzner to lead the implementation of the plan and prepare for the new Principal鈥檚 arrival. The Board is grateful that Debbie will continue to serve as Immediate Past President for the next two years.

The Board welcomes Alana Delcanho as a new member of the Board. Alana is a Carmel Alumni (1998), parent of three children, two of whom are Carmel students (Years 2 and Pre-Primary). Debbie Silbert:

The Board and the Carmel Community expresses its sincere thanks and appreciation to Debbie for her exceptional leadership of Carmel over the past 5 years, especially through the unprecedented COVID-19 period of 2020. As the School transitioned to online education it did so seamlessly with loss of only 1 teaching day and demonstrated best practise in communication and leadership during a crisis. Debbie鈥檚 leadership coincided with Principal Shula Lazar鈥檚 tenure which saw School spirit and academic results increase significantly including some exceptional ATAR, NAPLAN, sporting and cultural achievements. Debbie was a major proponent of the highly successful and popular biennial musical, led the flawless re-registration process and secured several large security grants from the Federal Government which greatly improved our School environment and security. Debbie has served on the Carmel Board since 2014 and prior to that was Co-President of the P&F and Secretary of Maccabi WA. Debbie and her husband Jonathon have three sons who attended Carmel from K-12 and this year end their time as Carmel parents with the graduation of their youngest sons. This is not the end of Debbie鈥檚 engagement and commitment to Carmel as she will continue her important role as Immediate Past President and other critical responsibilities.

Mark Majzner:

Mark attended Carmel from K-12, graduating in 1983, the fifth cohort to graduate from Carmel High School. He is a proud father of 2 Carmel alumni (2017 & 2019) and the third generation to have a leadership role with Carmel. Mark has served as Vice President since 2014, having led the last two rounds of strategy development and the recent recruitment of the new Principal. Mark is an experienced businessperson having lived and worked in Asia, Europe and Sydney for 22 years before moving back to Perth in 2012. Mark is a passionate and active community member having held leadership and advisory roles with the Perth Chevra Kadisha, Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce (WA) and Dianella Shule Fundraising Committee.

We have had family members as students at Carmel pretty much continuously since the mid-1960s and it is my privilege and responsibility to ensure Carmel and the Perth Jewish community continues to flourish for the next generation,鈥� said Mark.
